Alex hosted a 28mm Napoleonic game at the War Room on Sunday 29 June using General d’Armee II rules: Saxons (and other Germans from the Rhine Confederation) vs. Prussians and Russians. The game was a fictional scenario loosely set in Napoleon’s 1813 campaign.

Saxon deployment consisted of Brian (right), Alex (centre) and Philip (left), whereas the Allies were Rob and Kamall (left and centre), Craig (centre) and Richard (right).

The game started with Philip surprising the status quo by deploying infantry in square supported with cannon on the Saxon left. Opposite was the entire allied cavalry commanded by Richard. Realising his predicament Richard’s cavalry leave the flank to look for trouble elsewhere.

Saxon infantry form up behind woods and skirmishers from both sides exchange fire on the Allied left

Meanwhile on the opposite flank Brian’s Saxon infantry form up behind woods whilst his skirmishers occupy the wood. His two heavy cavalry units just inside the table from the infantry, adopt a threatening posture against my other infantry unit and Robs infantry. These formed square negating the threat from Saxon cavalry.

In the middle of the field Craig’s allied infantry position exchange artillery fire with Alex’s Saxon position on the hill. Alex’s reinforcements remain hidden behind the crest

In the centre artillery fire had little effect on either side although Craig’s guns took significant fire.

The allied right flank begins to fall

The situation worsened for the Russian allies on the right flank, Saxon left, as Phil’s infantry exploited the space left by Richards cavalry, completely outflanking the allied forces and forcing Craig’s infantry to take up a difficult defensive position.

Brian’s heavy Saxon cavalry adopt a threatening posture forcing Rob and Kamall’s Allied infantry to form square

In the left middle Richard’s cavalry arrive to oppose Brian’s cavalry but Robs and my infantry are still stuck in square.

Richard’s cavalry are victorious and push Brian’s cavalry off table.  On the left flank a new player (another Richard) takes command of the Saxon right flank and begins a series of retreating manoeuvres in an attempt to limit the extent of Russian musket fire.

Craig’s Prussians charge the Hill but are pushed back

With the loss of Brian’s cavalry, Craig’s infantry charges onto the hill also freeing my second brigade to support the attack on Richard’s (newbie) beleaguered infantry line.

The allied Russian and Prussian forces simply don’t have enough to stop Philip’s infantry on the right flank.

The allied right is totally overrun and despite the situation on the left of the table a Saxon victory is declared.
